The Unearthing

Released February 16, 2024

Monastral

The Unearthing is a passage into limbo, an intermediate state between living and dying through the lens of tragic loss and metaphors of more-than-human life. Using voice, electronics, Pure Data synthesis, a broken turntable, vinyl samples, field recordings, and synthesizer I created a holding place for metamorphosis. These songs and sonic textures were recorded and produced from 2020-2023 in my home studio, upstate New York, and in residency at Chop Wood, Carry Water in the driftless region of Northwest Illinois. There I formed the concept and text for the work told from the land’s perspective and its constant cycles of death and rebirth.

“This is pulsating, avant-pop with a totally different approach and result, and where the cross-pollinations of scenes and ideas are concerned, Naylor has achieved something mightily impressive.” Sun-13, Weirdo Rippers #12

“These heady tracks layer and loop for that repeating kind of feeling, giving way to glitched movement of the same sound sources to lock you right into the temporal wheel. Naylor’s poetic verse similarly pans into text collage with an effect both alien and dreamy above the set’s overall blurry sequence.” Longform Editions, First Impressions: 005
